Dental Exams & Cleanings

Seeing your teeth clearly is what makes it possible to protect them. A routine exam tells part of the story, but what’s happening beneath the gum line, between teeth, or inside the jaw often goes undetected without imaging. Dental X-rays give your care team an accurate, comprehensive picture of your oral health, revealing what can’t be seen with the naked eye and making it possible to act before small concerns become significant ones.

At Wenatchee Dental Arts, we incorporate dental X-rays as part of our commitment to comprehensive, individualized care. As part of our cleanings and prevention services, X-rays help us understand your full oral health picture so every recommendation we make is grounded in real diagnostic information, not assumptions.

What Dental X-Rays Reveal

Dental X-rays are one of the most powerful diagnostic tools available in modern dentistry. They allow us to identify concerns that a visual examination alone would miss, giving us the information needed to create a treatment plan that truly fits your needs.

There are several types of X-rays, each designed to capture different areas of the mouth:

  • Bitewing X-rays: Show the upper and lower back teeth and are used to detect cavities between teeth and monitor bone density changes
  • Periapical X-rays: Capture the full tooth from crown to root, helping identify infections, abscesses, and changes in bone structure
  • Panoramic X-rays: Provide a broad view of the whole mouth, jaw, and surrounding structures in a single image, useful for evaluating wisdom teeth, implant planning, and jaw conditions
  • Full-mouth series: Combines multiple X-rays to give a complete picture of every tooth and supporting bone

Each type serves a specific diagnostic purpose, and we use the appropriate imaging based on your individual health history and clinical presentation.

How Often Do You Need X-Rays?

The frequency of dental X-rays depends on your oral health status, age, risk factors, and history of dental disease. X-ray schedules should be determined on a case-by-case basis, tailored to each patient’s unique needs rather than applied uniformly. New patients often benefit from a full-mouth series to establish a baseline, while those with a history of stable oral health may only need bitewing X-rays every one to two years.

Children and teenagers tend to need more frequent imaging as their teeth and jaws are still developing, while adults with ongoing dental concerns may require them more regularly. Your dentist will always weigh the diagnostic value of imaging against your individual circumstances before recommending any X-rays.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Radiation exposure is a common concern among patients, and it’s a reasonable one to raise. Modern dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation, and digital X-ray systems, which are now standard in many practices, reduce exposure even further compared to traditional film-based imaging. The amount of radiation from a full set of dental X-rays is comparable to a fraction of the natural background radiation most people are exposed to daily.

Protective measures such as lead aprons and thyroid collars are used to minimize any incidental exposure to surrounding tissues. For pregnant patients, we take additional precautions and evaluate whether imaging can be deferred until after delivery. As part of your dental exams and cleanings, X-rays are always ordered thoughtfully, with your safety as a primary consideration.

X-Rays and Preventive Care

One of the most valuable things dental X-rays do is support early detection. Catching a cavity in its earliest stages, before it reaches the inner pulp of a tooth, is the difference between a simple filling and a root canal. Identifying early bone loss around the roots can prompt periodontal treatment before significant damage occurs. This proactive approach to home care and in-office monitoring keeps treatment conservative and protects your long-term oral health.

X-rays also play an important role in tracking changes over time. By comparing current images to previous ones, we can observe how your oral health is evolving, whether that’s monitoring a developing tooth, watching a small cavity to see if it progresses, or evaluating healing after a procedure.
