Dental Exams & Cleanings

Most people know they should see the dentist twice a year, but far fewer understand what actually happens during those visits — and why skipping them creates problems that go well beyond a little tooth sensitivity. Dental exams and cleanings are the foundation of lasting oral health, catching issues early when they are still small, manageable, and far less costly to treat. According to MedlinePlus, a routine dental exam and cleaning serves to determine the overall status of your oral health and build a treatment plan for anything that needs attention — well before problems become emergencies.

At Wenatchee Dental Arts, Dr. John Divis, DDS, and Dr. Riley Savage, DMD, have been serving patients across north-central Washington since 1993. Whether you are coming in for a routine cleaning or have not been seen in a few years, you can expect a team that takes your long-term health seriously — and never makes you feel judged for the gap.

What Happens During Your Dental Exam

A dental exam is more than a quick glance at your teeth. Dr. Divis or Dr. Savage conducts a thorough evaluation of your entire oral environment, looking for the kinds of early-stage changes that are far easier to address now than later.

Visual & Soft Tissue Check
We examine your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and throat for changes in color, texture, or structure. This is where early-stage cavities, irritation, and oral cancer signs are identified.
Periodontal Probing
Using a small probe, we measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. Shallow, consistent readings indicate healthy gums. Deeper pockets signal early gum disease — and catching it here makes treatment simple.
Digital X-Rays
Dental X-rays give us a detailed look at areas the naked eye cannot reach — between teeth, beneath the gumline, and inside the bone — with far lower radiation than traditional film.

What Happens During Your Professional Cleaning

Even the most diligent brusher and flosser leaves behind some buildup. A professional cleaning removes hardened deposits that home care simply cannot address. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of American adults aged 30 and older show signs of gum disease — much of which stems from untreated plaque and tartar accumulation that regular brushing alone cannot prevent.

Scaling
Our hygienist uses specialized instruments to carefully remove tartar (calculus) from all tooth surfaces, including below the gumline where the bacterial risk is highest.
Polishing
After scaling, the teeth are polished to smooth the enamel surface. Smoother enamel is harder for plaque to grip — which means less buildup between appointments.
Flossing & Review
We finish with thorough flossing and a review of your home care routine. If something could be working better — brush angle, floss type, timing — we will show you exactly what to adjust.

How Often Should You Schedule Visits

For most patients, twice-yearly visits are ideal. Some patients — particularly those managing active gum disease, dry mouth, or a history of frequent cavities — may benefit from visits every three to four months. During your exam, Dr. Divis or Dr. Savage will assess your specific risk factors and recommend a schedule that fits your needs.

A consistent schedule also gives our team a longitudinal view of your oral health. Changes that appear subtle in a single visit become meaningful trends when charted over time, allowing for earlier and more targeted intervention.

Why Regular Visits Matter More Than You May Think

Oral health does not exist in a vacuum. Research has long connected chronic gum disease to conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory illness. Staying current with your exams and cleanings addresses all of the following.

Early Cavity Detection
Small cavities caught at routine visits can often be treated with a simple filling rather than a crown or root canal — a fraction of the cost and chair time.
Gum Disease Prevention
Professional cleanings remove the bacterial buildup that drives gum inflammation before it has the chance to cause irreversible bone loss around your teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening
Dr. Divis and Dr. Savage perform a soft tissue screening as part of every exam, checking for lesions or abnormalities that warrant further evaluation. Early detection dramatically improves outcomes.
Fresher Breath
Professional cleaning removes the bacteria and calcified deposits responsible for persistent bad breath that brushing alone does not fully resolve.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Exams & Cleanings

How long does a cleaning and exam appointment take?

A routine visit typically takes 45 to 60 minutes for patients with healthy gums and no significant buildup. If it has been a while since your last cleaning, or if you have gum disease that requires more thorough scaling, the appointment may run longer. We will let you know in advance if we expect to need extra time.

Will it hurt?

Most patients find a professional cleaning comfortable. There may be mild sensitivity or pressure during scaling, especially if tartar has built up or your gums are inflamed — but that is temporary and resolves quickly after the appointment. If you have sensitive areas or dental anxiety, let us know before we start and we will adjust our approach. Sedation options are also available.

I have not been to the dentist in several years. What should I expect?

You will not be lectured or made to feel bad about the gap. Our job is to assess where your mouth is right now, address anything that needs attention, and get you back on a schedule that works. If significant buildup has occurred, we may recommend splitting the cleaning across two visits for your comfort. Either way, we handle it in whatever way makes the most sense for your specific situation.

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) addresses the visible surfaces of your teeth and the area just at the gumline. A deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is performed when gum disease has caused pockets to develop deeper below the gumline. If we identify that level of buildup during your exam, we will explain what we found and walk you through the recommended next steps before proceeding with anything.

Are dental exams and cleanings covered by benefits?

Most dental benefits plans cover preventive cleanings and exams at 100%, typically twice per year. We are in-network with Delta Dental and Premera Blue Cross. If you are uninsured or your plan does not cover everything, we will review your fees upfront. CareCredit and Cherry financing are available for any treatment beyond the preventive visit.
