Periodontal Disease Treatment

Gum disease progresses quietly. Many patients don’t notice symptoms until the condition has moved well beyond early inflammation, which is why periodontal disease is one of the most common and undertreated oral health conditions in the country. Understanding what treatment looks like makes a significant difference in long-term outcomes for both your smile and your overall health.

At Wenatchee Dental Arts, Dr. John Divis, DDS, FAGD, has been providing comprehensive dental care in the Wenatchee area since 1993. Our approach to periodontal disease care is built around treating each patient as an individual, not a number, which means your treatment plan reflects your specific condition, history, and goals.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Periodontal (gum) disease is a bacterial infection of the tissues and bone that support your teeth. It begins as gingivitis, a milder form of gum inflammation, but can advance into periodontitis if left unaddressed. At that stage, the supporting structures around your teeth begin to break down, leading to bone loss, gum recession, and, in severe cases, tooth loss.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, periodontal disease affects nearly half of adults aged 30 and older in the United States. The condition is also associated with systemic health issues, including heart disease and diabetes, making timely treatment critical beyond oral health alone.

How Periodontal Disease Is Treated

Treatment depends on the stage and severity of your diagnosis. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol, and our team will walk you through every step of the recommended approach before anything begins.

For mild to moderate cases, non-surgical treatment is typically the first course of action. The most common of these is scaling and root planing, sometimes referred to as a deep cleaning. During this procedure, we carefully remove tartar and bacterial buildup from below the gumline, then smooth the root surfaces to discourage bacteria from reattaching. Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable throughout.

For patients with more advanced disease, additional interventions may be recommended.

These can include:

  • Antibiotic therapy (applied locally or taken orally) to target persistent bacterial infection
  • Laser-assisted treatment to remove diseased tissue with greater precision and comfort
  • Surgical procedures to reduce pocket depth, regenerate bone, or reshape the gum tissue

Each of these options has specific indications, and our team will help you weigh the benefits based on your current condition.

The role of sedation is also worth mentioning. For patients who have dental anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry options that can make periodontal treatment significantly more manageable. Dr. Divis and our team want your experience to feel as comfortable as possible, and we’re happy to discuss what may be right for you.

What to Expect After Treatment

Recovery from periodontal treatment varies by procedure. Following scaling and root planing, some tenderness and sensitivity are normal for a few days. Patients are typically advised to avoid hard or crunchy foods briefly and to keep the area clean with gentle brushing and prescribed rinses.

For more involved surgical procedures, healing may take a few weeks. Throughout any recovery period, our team remains available to answer questions and monitor your progress.

One of the most important factors in long-term success is what happens after active treatment.

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition, which means ongoing maintenance visits are essential to keeping it under control. These appointments, typically scheduled every three to four months, allow us to monitor the health of your gum tissue, measure pocket depths, and perform targeted cleanings that maintain the results of your treatment.

Prevention and Ongoing Oral Health

Treating periodontal disease is only part of the picture. Preventing its recurrence requires a consistent commitment to both professional care and at-home hygiene. Routine dental exams and cleanings give us the opportunity to catch early signs of inflammation before they progress, which is one of the most effective ways to protect your long-term oral health.

Your daily habits matter just as much. Brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and staying current with your professional cleanings creates a strong foundation against gum disease recurrence. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco use and uncontrolled diabetes can also increase your risk, and addressing those with your broader healthcare team is an important piece of comprehensive care.
